New London School Explosion

3:17 pm, March 18, 1937, 294* innocent children and their teachers were killed in a school explosion caused by a natural gas leak.

The next time you smell natural gas (the rotten egg odor) you smell is because 296 innocent individuals, mainly children lost their life one afternoon at school in New London Texas. In its natural state, natural gas has no odor. Texas was the first state in the United States to require a malodorant be introduced into natural gas distribution systems. The law was passed after 296 innocent people died when New London School exploded.
